The City of Jordan is a community rich in natural amenities and encourages its residents to pursue sustainable choices. As a Green Step City participant, Jordan has taken steps to reduce its energy footprint, encourage clean energy and promote green initiatives throughout the city.

SolSmart

The city has received national recognition from the SolSmart program for addressing local barriers to solar energy and for making it “faster, easier, and more affordable to go solar.” The program provides free technical assistance for cities, counties, and regional organizations to be “open for solar” and in recognition, communities can achieve Bronze, Silver, and Gold designation. Over 500 communities are recognized by SolSmart across the US including 47 in Minnesota. In 2017, the City applied to be certified through SolSmart, receiving Bronze designation. In 2021, the City achieved SolSmart Silver and SolSmart Gold in 2023. Rooftop solar installations are allowed by-right in all zoning districts, to encourage solar energy. The City has taken steps to remove restrictive zoning requirements, attended trainings on solar permitting and inspections, and created a permitting checklist to streamline the process.
